Elgin offers Edgewater residents many choices for extended learning.

Elgin offers Edgewater residents many choices for extended learning.

You ask a real estate professional to tell you what’s the most important factor to consider in buying a new house. What is the one answer that you’re almost certain to receive? The answer, of course, is always: “Location. Location. Location.”

Well, the same holds true from a builder’s perspective when developing a community. Del Webb brand for active adults have developed a well-respected process for identifying lifestyle locations over the past 40 years.

So are builders and active-adult buyers both looking for something similar in their search for the “perfect place?” It’s less obvious than you think. If you’re guessing scenic views, convenience to shopping and entertainment, access to transportation, or other standard realtor spin, there’s more to the story. Both builders and buyers are finding benefits of having a college or university in the neighborhood!

Michele Lerner of The Washington Times writes recently that “active-adult communities, restricted to households with residents age 55 and older, are frequently located near educational institutions so that residents can participate in classes and continue learning as they age.”

She explains that staying mentally and physically fit, as well as socially active, is made simpler in these communities. Many residents are pre-retired, semiretired or retired, with extra time to spend on their own interests, including volunteering outside the community. Establishing such valuable connections with nearby cultural and educational outlets encourages an enriched environment and lifestyle for everyone.

Healthy Heart CT Scan is available for Edgewater residents in two Elgin locations. It makes a great Valentine's Day gift.

Sherman's Healthy Heart CT Scan is available for Edgewater residents in two Elgin locations. It makes a great Valentine's Day gift.

It’s time to start thinking about Valentine’s Day and for Del Webb’s Edgewater residents, we have a very special way for you to say “I love you” this year.

No, it’s not by sending a dozen roses or delivering a heart-shaped box of chocolates. This gift is from, or rather, is for the heart. Consider giving a loved one or yourself a Healthy Heart CT Scan from Sherman Heart and Vascular Center.

Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are our nation’s number one killer.  The Healthy Heart CT Scan spots calcium deposits in your coronary arteries — an early sign of heart disease. Detecting these deposits early can help you take preventive measures before symptoms ever occur. It only takes 15 minutes and is completely painless.

You should take this test if you’re a man 40-65 years old or a woman 45-70 years old and have any of the following risk factors: diabetes, history of smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of heart disease.

Is it time to start thinking about downsizing?

Is it time to start thinking about downsizing?

There are many questions involved in making a decision to downsize from the family home of many years. Whether you’re entering a new stage of life because the kids have left to pursue their own lives or if home maintenance doesn’t seem appealing any longer, it may be time to consider a move.

Well, for the semi-empty nester such as yourself who is contemplating the possibility of starting a new lifestyle, one thing comes to mind most frequently. “How do I even start to incorporate years of memories in a new home?”

We understand that this is a major life transition so we have come up with six basic questions (and answers) to start you thinking about the possibility of a new home in your future. Whenever you reach that decision, an active adult lifestyle can bring you a wealth of benefits including efficiencies, entertainment, services, time and much more.

1. Why downsizing?
You now live in a home meant for children and pets and are now left with lots of space and leftover belongings. Also, yards, whether large or small, have required your time and money to maintain over the years.  Downsizing means that you can move into a home well-suited for you and your spouse free of yard and snow maintenance and even exterior home maintenance.  Downsizing gives you more time to do the things you enjoy best.
